From one of our first brass products to today's highlights: Our All-Stars Junction Boxes

The mix of durability and development is an important feature that an All-Star team is about. On the celebration of our centenary, we are going to introduce our All-Stars team of junction boxes from a hundred years of product history.

In 1917, the Handelsschiff-Normenausschuss (HNA) is founded. This standardisation is expected to bring immense economic benefits. Wilhelm Hoppmann, one of the two company founders, recognises a gap in the market, to manufacture products in series, which comply with the HNA norm as well as the requirements of shipbuilding.

In the beginning, the range consists of a small selection of ship installation products made of cast brass. Part of this assortment are the first WISKA junction boxes. The brass material ensures the products are very robust and virtually indestructible.

This first range of junction boxes are round, a shape that is quick and easy to manufacture and assemble. In time, the more common square shape is produced, allowing greater space of installation and cable entry.

In 1925 WISKA begins manufacturing a high-quality range of watertight plastic junction boxes. This range (like the first plastic cable gland from WISKA) is produced using thermosetting plastic Duroplast, an innovative material for the time, opening up new non-maritime markets.

The first products are produced in round, followed some time later by a square version. The lid is fastened using four screws and cables are inserted using a PG cable gland.

In order to further improve the use of the junction boxes, the lid attachment is optimised in 1939. The number of screws needed for the fixing is reduced from four to one in the middle (central locking), shortening assembly time.

In 1957 WISKA begins to develop and manufacture connection sleeves in-house. Connection sleeves enable two identical cables to be easily connected in areas where space is restricted.

In 1961 WISKA produces its first thermoplastic installation junction box: the KA series. As well as the new thermoplastic material, the KA series also offers a new type of lid requiring no screws. Furthermore, the KA series features a unique cable entry system thanks to the use of a special seal. First these junction boxes are also available in round form and a short time later in square form.

By 1969 this seal is integrated into the base part of the junction box.

The brand name WISOCOR stands for "WISKA without corrosion" and is used and promoted for a long time as a family brand for the entire range of plastic junction boxes. In 1974 it is officially registered as a trademark.

1993 - COMBI® junction boxes conquers the market

In 1993, the COMBI® junction box range is launched. Using 2-component injection moulding, WISKA first launches the COMBI® 308 model. The COMBI® 308 is made from thermoplastic housing as well as being both UV and ozone resistant. The design combines both threaded and membrane entries for installation without tools or locknuts. The quarter turn screws offer a rust-free, quick and secure fastening and the dome belly offers 10% additional installation space.

In 2016, expanding on our junction box range WISKA launches the WHK. A pre-assembled junction box offering flexible connection options using a plug-in solution. Cable entry is convenient via connection pieces or cable glands.

Throughout the years, WISKA focusses on a close and good cooperation with its business partners. In 2018, WISKA once again launches products on the market which, after intensive discussions with contractors, also incorporate practical experiences.

The KA series receives a complete revamp and is optimised to three sizes. The use of two types of plastics for the lid (PP) and base (PE) creates greater flexibility and ease of installation. As well as improved mounting options, as the KA series also adds cable retention through the use of a clever strain relief ring.

WISKA also launches two new sizes of COMBI®, the COMBI® 206 and 116. The COMBI® 116 measuring 152 x 76 mm offers twice the installation space of the 108 model as well as 18 membrane entries. The COMBI® 206 is the smallest member of the COMBI® family measuring 85 x 49 mm (approximately half the size of the COMBI® 308 model), has six membrane threaded entries and two rear membrane entries. This clever little box is perfect for outside applications including video-surveillance systems and LED lighting.
