WISKA LED Searchlights for Marine Navigation and Safety

In addition to floodlighting, WISKA produces advanced LED searchlights that address the specialized needs of marine navigation, signaling, and security. Modern LED searchlights offer powerful beams for long-distance visibility (critical for navigation or search-and-rescue). The marine lamps (or sea lantern) also improve energy efficiency and reducing maintenance compared to traditional lamps. WISKA’s searchlight lineup includes state-of-the-art remote-controlled LED searchlights for vessels, as well as application-specific models like the Suez Canal Searchlight SKS 575 and the HML-ISO Day Signalling Searchlight. These products highlight WISKA’s commitment to high-end quality and innovation in maritime lighting.

Remote-Controlled Dual-Purpose LED Searchlight

One of WISKA’s flagship offerings is its new LED Searchlight. It is a remote-controlled, dual-purpose unit that functions as both a searchlight and a floodlight. Announced as a “state-of-the-art searchlight”, this new maritime light exemplifies the high-end quality, performance, and durability of WISKA products. It is the response to the growing demand for modern LED solutions in the marine industry. The LED Searchlight features a twin-head design (usually an octagonal or hexagonal LED array on each side of a pan/tilt mechanism). That allows it to project an intensely focused beam or a broad flood as needed. Each head contains high power LED lighting with a combined maximum output of 2 × 145 W in floodlight mode. In searchlight mode it has a maximum output of 2 × 100 W. In searchlight (spot) mode, the light produces an extremely high intensity – up to 2 × 1,700,000 candela. The advantage: a long-range beam for spotting objects at a distance. In floodlighting mode, it can deliver a massive 2 × 18,000 lumens to illuminate wide areas on demand. The light color is a cool white 5000 K, optimal for clear visibility and signaling.

Built as marine lantern, WISKA’s LED searchlight is housed in a powder-coated stainless steel body that provides exceptional durability and corrosion resistance against seawater. The unit is rated IP66/68, indicating it is completely protected against dust and can withstand powerful water jets and even prolonged submersion (IP68 test conditions). This robust construction ensures reliability through the toughest maritime conditions, from freezing climates to salt spray and storm rains. The searchlight is specified to operate effectively between -25 °C and +45 °C ambient temperature. That guarantees consistent performance in both cold and tropical environments. Such ruggedness makes it a dependable choice for ships that venture through diverse climates and rough seas.

A standout feature of this LED searchlight is its dual-functionality and advanced control system. The light can serve as a focused searchlight or a wide-beam floodlight at the flick of a switch, allowing crew to seamlessly toggle between modes depending on the situation. This dual-purpose design eliminates the need for separate units and increases versatility for the vessel. The searchlight is typically mounted on a motorized pan/tilt platform with endless rotation capability and variable speed control, enabling it to cover 360° around the vessel and adjust elevation for comprehensive coverage. Operators control the system via an intuitive remote control unit, which is designed for maximum functionality and ease of use. Using the remote console (joystick, touchscreen or button panel), the crew can rotate and tilt the beam, switch between search and flood modes. It can activate special features like the booster, scan, and Morse code signaling functions. The “booster” mode likely provides a temporary intensity increase for critical moments, while an automated scan sweep can enhance visibility and safety during navigation or perimeter surveillance. A home position function is included so the light can be commanded to return to a preset default orientation. That ensures it’s always ready and aligned as needed. The remote control can also be customized to specific user requirements or integrated with a ship’s broader control systems. The result: a tailored lighting solution for each maritime application.

Beyond performance and convenience, WISKA’s LED searchlight contributes to efficiency and sustainability. It provides significant power savings and lower emissions compared to older high-power searchlights (which often used xenon or halogen lamps), thus helping reduce a ship’s overall energy consumption and CO₂ footprint. Particularly advantageous: The elimination of frequent bulb replacements (thanks to LED technology) also means less hazardous waste (no spent mercury or xenon lamps) and lower maintenance effort. In essence, the WISKA LED Searchlight “illuminates the future” with a combination of brighter output, better efficiency, and engineered endurance, making nighttime operations safer and greener.

Suez Canal Searchlight SKS 575

Suez Canal Searchlight SKS 575

Suez Canal Searchlight SKS 575

WISKA developed the SKS 575 Suez Canal Searchlight to meet the specific requirements of ships navigating the Suez Canal, where a powerful searchlight is mandatory for transit. The SKS 575 is a modernized version of WISKA’s searchlight designed to replace older, bulkier models. By switching from traditional halogen lamps to a 575 W metal-halide lamp, WISKA achieved an enormous reduction in size and improved efficiency. The SKS 575 has only about 20 % of the volume of its predecessor, representing an 80 % reduction in size. It is also over 20 % lighter in weight, making it much easier to handle and install on board. Despite the compact form, it remains extremely rugged – the housing is made from double-sided powder-coated stainless steel, providing high protection against corrosion and seawater and ensuring longevity in the demanding marine environment. The design follows WISKA’s signature octagonal searchlight style, matching the look of their LED searchlights and maintaining consistency in build quality and reliability.

The SKS 575 is marketed as “one for all vessels” because it can be used on ships of any size, both below and above 30,000 GT, satisfying the Suez Canal Authority’s requirements across the board. When not in operation, an included protective cover can be placed over the front glass for additional defense against weather and damage. In terms of performance, the move to a 575 W metal-halide lamp dramatically improved efficiency: the prior models drew 2000–3000 W, so the power requirement was cut by up to 75 %. At the same time, lamp lifespan increased from roughly 400 hours (typical of high-power halogens) to about 1000 hours with the metal-halide, and luminous efficacy jumped to 85 lm/W, meaning more light output per watt. This results in a bright beam that fulfills navigational needs but with significantly reduced energy consumption and far fewer bulb changes. The SKS 575 has easy-to-use mechanical controls: it features rotary levers to adjust beam direction and focus, and even includes a spare lamp that can be quickly switched if the primary lamp fails. The searchlight is certified by DNV GL (Det Norske Veritas–Germanischer Lloyd) and approved by the Suez Canal Authority, attesting that it meets the necessary safety and performance standards for use during Canal transits (). Overall, WISKA’s SKS 575 is a compact yet powerful searchlight that offers universal applicability, improved efficiency, and robust build – a clear upgrade for ships requiring Suez Canal compliant lighting.

HML-ISO LED Day Signalling Searchlight

In addition to large mounted searchlights, WISKA addresses the need for handheld signaling lights with its HML-ISO Day Signalling Searchlight, now available in an updated LED version. Daylight signaling lamps (often used to send Morse code or flashing signals between ships) are required by SOLAS regulations, and WISKA’s HML-ISO has long been a staple in this category. The new model retains the ergonomic, handheld design of the original but replaces the old halogen bulb with a modern LED module for vastly improved performance and safety.

The HML-ISO LED searchlight is designed for safe and simple signaling. It features a lightweight yet durable polyamide (fiber-reinforced) housing that is comfortable to handle with adjustable hand straps for both left- or right-handed operation. The device runs on low-voltage DC power (either 12 V or 24 V), and impressively it automatically recognizes the input voltage and adapts – making it easy to use on different vessels without manual switching. The new LED light source consumes only about 5 W but offers an extremely long service life (the recommended LED module life is about 10,000 hours, versus roughly 50 hours for the old 30 W halogen lamp it replaces). This huge leap in longevity means far less frequent bulb changes and greatly improved reliability during emergency signaling operations. The HML-ISO LED is certified and approved by DNV in accordance with SOLAS and MED (Marine Equipment Directive) standards, ensuring it meets all requirements as an approved Morse signaling lamp for ships.

Practical features make the HML-ISO very user-friendly. Color filter disks (for signaling in different colors) can be mounted externally in front of the lamp without needing to open the device, allowing quick changes of filter (common colors are red, yellow, green, blue) (). On the rear of the unit, an integrated SOS function is provided, along with an LED indicator for battery status, aiding in emergency use. The lamp has a “permanent light” mode as well as a trigger for momentary signals, and a practical front rocker switch with a built-in micro-switch that makes manual signaling (such as sending Morse code) very comfortable and precise. WISKA also incorporates its VentGLAND® technology into the cable assembly – a special breathing cable gland that prevents condensation inside the lamp and includes an anti-kink strain relief to protect the power cable from damage. The HML-ISO LED unit is rated IP56 for water ingress, sufficient for use on deck in rough weather. With a compact size (approximately 160 × 244 × 215 mm) and the vastly improved efficiency and lifespan of LED technology, the HML-ISO LED searchlight offers a modern, reliable solution for daylight signaling that enhances ship safety while reducing maintenance efforts. It perfectly illustrates WISKA’s approach to updating traditional marine lighting equipment with contemporary LED innovation.

Maritime light: What lighting does a ship need?

Whether on a sailing boat or motorboat, there are regulations governing ship lights. The correct use and light installation of the nav lights are internationally regulated, for example in the SeeSchStrO (German Maritime Traffic Regulations) and the COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea). Marine navigation LED lights play a key role in preventing collisions at sea.

Sea LED: What makes lights suitable for ships?

Navigational lights on a ship are robustly designed, seawater-resistant, and built for continuous use under demanding maritime conditions. They ensure clear visibility and reliable signaling even in poor weather and low-visibility situations. WISKA offers a wide range of navigation and signal lights for ships over 50 meters in length.

A typical navigation light is the masthead light. This is a white light with a horizontal arc of 225°, usually mounted at the front of the mast at sufficient height, indicating that the sailing vessel is underway. WISKA provides a navigation lantern for the masthead. The single masthead lights and double masthead lights come with approvals from DNV-GL, UL, MED, and BSH.

For optimal hull lighting, maritime lanterns are also used on the starboard and port sides. The so-called sidelights indicate the vessel’s direction. For port (left), WISKA offers single and double sidelights in red. For starboard (right), a green sidelight is required. WISKA also provides single and double sidelights in green. For these marine LED nav lights, a horizontal arc of 112.5° is required.

Other navigation lights on ships are placed at the stern. WISKA offers stern lights in white with a 135° horizontal arc. Options include single and double stern lights with P28s lamp holders. Additionally, a yellow towing light can be mounted at the stern.

Depending on the vessel type, an additional ship navigation light may be required. WISKA also offers all-round lights. A 360° all-round light (also called a signal light) is available as a double signal lantern in white and red. WISKA’s single signal lantern is available in red, green, and white (depending on the application).

Maneuvering lights in white with a 360° horizontal arc, as well as flashing and signalling light (outdoor lighting), complete WISKA’s extensive range of navigation lights in polycarbonate. In brass, WISKA also offers steering lights (Type 1004 and 1006) and morse lights.
