Cable glands

Cable glands for industry and trade

Despite their small and simple design, cable glands are an important component of electrical installations. They are used in nearly all areas of industry and trade.

They ensure safe cable entry, provide strain relief, and make sure that cables are introduced into junction boxes, distribution boards, control cabinets, and similar enclosures in a dust- and watertight manner. Cable glands protect electrical components from mechanical stress such as bending and kinking, as well as from environmental influences like dust and moisture, by securely and tightly connecting the cable to the enclosure wall.

In principle, a cable gland consists of three parts: cap nut, sealing insert for cable glands and socket. The cap nut can perform additional functions to protect the cable from mechanical influences. This can be a bend protection for polyamide cable glands or made from brass, or a particularly strong external strain relief from plastic or brass. Even stronger cable protection can be achieved by using plastic or metal cable protection hoses. These protect the cable against extreme conditions with integrated connections (plastic / metall).

What types of cable glands are there?

At WISKA, standard cable glands can be equipped with EMC inserts to become fully-fledged EMC cable glands, ensuring electromagnetic compatibility and eliminating the need for separate storage of special EMC cable glands. Other variants of cable glands include the EX cable gland with ATEX certification, which is used in potentially explosive areas. They are available in plastic (polyamide), brass or stainless steel. There are also special hygienic design cable glands that are used in hygiene-relevant industries such as the food industry. For outdoor cable connections, there are cable glands with pressure compensation to prevent condensation. In addition, WISKA offers the ESKV-P, a push-in cable gland without a lock nut, and a cable gland set.

Which cable gland for which cable?

For special requirements, WISKA also offers split cable glands and cable entries for pre-assembled cables, as well as double cable glands and multiple cable glands with which several cables can be inserted into one enclosure using sealing inserts for standard cable glands. The sealing inserts can be combined with cable glands in all materials and cable glands with long threads (plastic, brass), as well as VentGLAND® pressure-equalising cable glands. WISKA also offers special sealing inserts for flat cables, seals for ASi bus and inserts for pre-assembled cables for standard cable glands.

What types of threaded connections are available?

Cable glands usually have metric threads that are standardised worldwide. However, standardised steel conduit threads (PG) are also used. The corresponding fittings are called PG cable glands. Unlike in Europe, cable glands with self-sealing NPT (National Pipe Thread) threads are widely used in the US market.

What is the difference between a cable entry and a cable gland?

As an alternative to cable glands, where the cable is screwed tightly to the enclosure, threadless cable entries or a cable entry system can also be used, depending on the application. For many applications, the strain relief and IP protection class are sufficient. Cable entries are a cost-effective alternative to cable glands with very quick and easy installation.

Metric cable glands

Table of thread/clamping ranges for metric cable glands

The table below shows the different thread sizes and clamping ranges of metric cable glands. Metric cable glands ensure a secure and tight connection for cable installations. Thanks to their reliable sealing, they provide optimal protection against environmental influences.

Typical sizes range from smaller cable glands such as M12 and M16, to the widely used M20 and M25, up to large metric cable glands like M63 and M75. Unlike PG or NPT cable glands, versions with metric connection threads use an internationally standardized ISO thread.

What does PG cable gland mean?

Table of thread/clamping ranges for cable glands with PG thread

PG cable glands are classic cable entry solutions primarily used in older machinery, control cabinets, and existing installations. Unlike metric cable glands standardized according to ISO or NPT cable glands with tapered threads for the US market, PG cable glands use the Panzergewinde (armored conduit thread) in accordance with DIN standards.

The table showing thread sizes and clamping ranges for cable glands with PG threads provides all relevant information for selecting the appropriate cable gland. For example, a PG11 cable gland can reliably secure cables with a diameter of 5 to 10 mm. Polyamide and brass PG cable glands therefore offer dependable protection against the ingress of dust and moisture.

Pressure equalisation cable glands – preventing condensation formation

Electrical installations that are subject to major temperature fluctuations and high moisture require a unique solution. WISKA’s innovative pressure equalisation cable gland VentGLAND® contains a semi-permeable ePTFE membrane, which ensures constant pressure equalisation between the inside and outside of the casing.

VentGLAND® allows the casing to breathe. In this way, pressure equalisation cable glands minimise the hazard of condensation formation.

The VentPLUG is used when a cable gland with an additional pressure equalization unit is required to vent the enclosure.

Pressure equalization units from WISKA are now also available in thread sizes M20 and M40, in addition to M12. Both feature a flat, space-saving design to enable flexible usage. Thanks to an improved membrane, the air flow rate of the new VentPLUG in the sizes M20 and M40 has more than doubled. The high air flow version even achieves a 2.5 times higher value.

You may also use our venting calculator to compute the optimal application of our pressure equalization products.
